“You’re going back to Kenya again? Why?” a friend asked. “Why not?” I answered. The question got me thinking. First of all, that friend doesn’t know how much I love travel, but more importantly what is it that is drawing me back to Kenya for the third time in thirteen months?
My first and second trip to Kenya was with Linda Higdon and her beautiful tour, Women’s Journey to Kenya. Yes, you read that right! I loved the experience I had with Linda so much that I went back with her and a new set of adventurous souls only four months after getting home from my maiden voyage.
Now that I’m heading back for the third time to visit with my new Kenyan friends I know exactly why I love this country so much. Since I am a photographer and not a writer, I present to you in pictures (in no particular order)…
My Top 7 Reasons for My Love Affair with Kenya!
- Me
I suppose the main reason is me. Here, I am in my happy place. My heart is completely open and I am joyfully living in the moment.
2. The Wildlife
When you think of Africa you may think of the animals. Connecting with these beauties is profound. I know that’s a bold statement to make but when I looked into this ellie’s eyes it felt like the earth moved beneath my feet. Also, I love her war paint.
3. The Culture
One of my very favorite things about traveling is getting “off the beaten path” and seeing how the people really live. Kenya is so rich in culture and has 42 different tribes living within its borders. Here we have the fierce and lovely Samburu women living in the high desert.
4. The Children
They are heartbreakingly beautiful. The majority of the children I met live in the worst of circumstances but have not lost their joy. This is David at Good Samaritan Home for Children in the slums of Nairobi. His dream is to be President. Looking into those eyes, I believe he will.
5. The Women
They have everything to teach us. From the wisdom they hold about farming and life to the daily singing and dancing to lift themselves and their “sisters” up. They are magical and I am the better for knowing them.
6. Fellow Travelers
My apologies to Paul (Linda’s husband who accompanies us on the tour… and whom I adore) but traveling with other women is the best. The laughter and friendships I carry with me every day.
7. The Land
I can’t explain it but every time the wheels on the plane touch down in Nairobi I have the overwhelming feeling I’m home. I said to a Kenyan friend once, “I love the way Kenya smells”. He said, “It smells like life”.
